NAPLAN has nothing to do with learning. It has nothing to do with teaching. It has nothing to do with real schooling. It has to do with finding fault and making money. It’s an ineffective, unreliable and invalid device that makes the most of young children’s vulnerability and it deliberately threatens their cognitive development and emotional stability.

NAPLANITIS is a school-borne disease that dehumanises the relationships between a pupil and a teacher; and destroys the positiveness of the learning contract that pupilling entails. It has spread through each school to all levels from the excessive demands placed on Years 3,5,7,9 pupils reacting as data-robots in their attempts to record what they have been conditioned to believe are answers to obtuse NAPLAN questions that have little to do with real-life situations. It has spread through the Australian school system and is destroying the enthusiasm for learning. Naplanitis is a no-brain condition, carried out by thoughtless measurement technicians, who live in a different world from practitioners and whose ‘knowledge of teaching can be written on the back of a used postage stamp in large font’.

NAPLAN just shouldn’t happen.

NAPLAN testing, the rotten GERM from which NAPLANITIS emerges, has altered schooling in Australia more than any other device in the past eighty years. Nothing has worried parents more for many years. They have become extremely concerned about what is going on at school. Nothing has caused pupils to dislike particular subjects and schooling more. Nothing has caused the exit from the profession of so many high-quality teachers who are just so burnt-out and disillusioned. Never before have so many parents opted out of hard-core testing. There are serious issues of ethics and professionalism within the teaching fraternity as well as within the measurement fraternity itself.

It could be said that Teaching is an unreliable profession with dodgy ethics. Its stature is maintained only by those practitioners at the chalk-face who diligently maintain high standards in the face of measurers’ focus on the mediocre.

Fear has driven NAPLAN to infect Years 1,2,4,6,8 as well in schools where the climate is debilitating. Word is that this form of contagion is very serious.

The big question : Who does what to whom; and why ?

Naplan operations must be recorded in history as the greatest schooling disaster ever. It will only cease when schooling is returned to school teachers.

Compare the medical profession run by ambulance drivers; or the legal profession run by gaol wardens. What would their professional leaders do about it?
