Early Theme song: ‘Care for Kids’

The Treehorn Express is dedicated to the cessation of Kleinist NAPLAN testing in Australia.  Kleinism is a New York version of fear-driven schooling which separates ‘haves’ from ‘have nots’ and opens the door for mega-bank-rolling by known curriculum vandals for control of school-based learning. That’s why it exists. It disrespects school pupils, devalues teachers’ professionalism, forces States to prescribe school texts and teaching strategies, threatens Australia’s developmental future and is just no good.  Politely described, it stinks.

Ideologically, NAPLAN is immoral, unprofessional, politically driven, unrequested by the profession, curriculum destructive, extremely costly, wasteful and divisive. It has a background of malicious intent.

IT WILL REMAIN UNTIL ENOUGH GOOD PEOPLE SAY “STOP IT”.

Care For Kids – Lyrics

1979 was declared The International Year of the Child.  I was asked to chair the Queensland school program and I was able to second a splendid young teacher from Brisbane North Region to help me. Help me! She ran it.  Tanya Aspland is now located at The University of Adelaide.

It was the wrong year for anything to do with caring for children in Queensland.  It was the middle of the largest Standards Debate of the 20th century. As well, campaigner Rona Joyner was in full flight and had Joh’s cabinet tied up with her moral fibre. With the help of like-minded alphabetical organisations [STOP-CARE, CUFF, ACES, NCC] and organisations that were determined to judge and punish those who did not support her doctrines, she was remarkably successful. M:ACOS and Study of Society and various books were banned. Premier Joh was headlined in the Courier Mail as saying that “…there are people in the Education Department that do not seem to know what we want taught in our schools.” Fancy that.

The Year of the Child  showed “… the depth of adults’ ignorance of the problems of children ” [Michael Jupp].

Then….nothing happened.  Adults proved very slow to learn about kids. Advocacy for children at school  kept sliding down over the thirty years since, until, in 2009, Joh’s worst image took over in Canberra.  NAPLAN hit the kids, based on a copy of NCLB in the USA.

The only obvious  treasure to emerge from the year was the jingle, “Care for Kids.”  written by well-know film composer Peter Best.  Click on the Treehorn’s theme song above and sing along  with these lyrics.

Care for Kids

Care for kids

Find a minute to spare for kids

Such a lot you can share with kids

It’s important to care for kids

Care for kids

Try to always be there for kids

Won’t you let down your hair for kids

It’s important to care for kids

Oh kids

With the stars in their eyes there’s so much to be learning …. Kids

You can help them to rise and keep the new world turning

Though they’re small

We need them all

Care for kids

Find a minute to spare for kids

Such a lot you can share with kids

It’s important to care for kids

Care for kids

Try to always be there for kids

Won’t you let down your hair for kids

It’s important to care for kids

Care for kids

Find a minute to spare for kids

Such a lot you can share with kids

It’s important to care for kids

  2. What valuable history and context you provide Phil Cullem. Thank you. I’m so concerned that I’ve shared this page on these Facebook pages https://www.facebook.com/groups/educationreinventors/ https://www.facebook.com/groups/educatorsengagingwitheducators/ https://www.facebook.com/protectingchildhoodAER/ and https://www.facebook.com/teachthechildrenwell/ We must keep shedding light on the politically driven demise of education in Australia.
